Scouts Win National Training Award

The UK's largest mixed youth training organisation has achieved a prestigious National Training Award for training excellence with staff at its UK Headquarters at Gilwell Park in Chingford. The Awards, granted by the Department for Education and Skills, are regarded as the national number one accolade for businesses and individuals that have achieved lasting excellence and success through training.

The Scout Association, in direct competition with leading retail, media and service sector companies, was granted the Award in recognition of its work in the development and training of staff at its national Information Centre at Scout Association Headquarters.

Camping Permits

Nights Away

Permit Scheme

The Activities Team will be sending full details of the Nights Away Permit Scheme to DCs during May. The District packs will include full information about the scheme and samples of the new resources. Additional copies will also be sent to County and Area Commissioners.

The Nights Away Permit Scheme does not need to be implemented until September 2004 During the next eighteen months, the Activities Team will be providing additional material to promote all residential experiences. The aim across the Movement over the next few years is to increase the number of nights spent away from home. For more information please contact the

Activities Team on 020 8433 7125.

The Committee of the Council has agreed to adopt the new Residential and Camping Permit Scheme. The recommendation followed ten-year's research and trials. The scheme has a number of objectives, a principle one being to make it easier to take young people for nights away away by reducing the red tape associated with PC Forms. The scheme also seeks to ensure that residential and camping experiences are of high quality and popular with young people. Districts/Counties/Areas will receive scheme material in the Spring 2003 following which there will be a number of stages leading to full implementation across UK by September 2004.

Skills Day Success

Over 40 leaders attended the skills day on the 3rd of November at the 58th Fife headquarters. Margaret Kidd, and her team had produced a wide variety of resources for Beaver /Cub Leaders to use, everyone went away with a pile of free "gizzits" which will no doubt prove very useful when it comes to constructing programmes ... well done to Margaret and her team

The Scottish Executive launched a new publication - ‘Parent Checklist for Youth Activities’ – on 1st October 2002, designed to support good practice with respect to child protection policies and procedures within youth organisations. It sets out 15 questions that parents/guardians might wish to ask of youth organisations (e.g. local Scout Groups) in order to be satisfied that an organisation provides a safe environment for their child. The issues raised relate to standard good practice. Responses to most are supported directly by POR. The Executive intends that the document will be widely available to parents, with distribution being organised through Primary Schools. The document can be viewed on the Scottish Executive’s website at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/library5/education/pcya-00.asp
